A new home should make room for a child’s existing identity. Their language, faith, food, hair and skin care, friendships and family traditions may all matter in everyday ways. Ask what is important to the particular child, what you can learn and which relationships should be supported through their care plan. You do not have to share every part of their background, but you do need to listen, respect it and seek guidance when you need it.
The people around you
Fostering Hearts provides preparation, training and a supervising social worker who supports you as a carer. Existing carers also have urgent out-of-hours support. Ask how supervision and training would work from your home in Manchester; recruitment enquiries are answered Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm.
If you already foster, bring your experience and questions about moving agency. Any children currently living with you need to remain central to the planning.
